Sore throats are common in Australia, especially during seasonal changes, dry weather, or viral infections. Gargling is one of the simplest ways to ease throat irritation, reduce inflammation, and wash away germs. When done correctly, it can support faster relief and comfort.
What gargling does
Gargling helps clean the throat surface, moisturise irritated tissue, and loosen mucus. It can also reduce local bacterial load and provide mild pain relief, depending on the solution used.
Common gargling solutions in Australia
- Difflam Ready-to-Use Sore Throat Gargle with Iodine
Contains povidone-iodine, an antiseptic that kills bacteria and viruses. It is ready to use and suitable for adults. - Difflam Sore Throat Gargle & Mouth Solution
Contains benzydamine hydrochloride, an anti-inflammatory medicine that soothes throat pain and swelling. - Difflam Plus Sore Throat & Mouth Solution
Combines benzydamine and chlorhexidine for both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. - Betadine Ready-to-Use Sore Throat Gargle
Contains povidone-iodine, used widely for its antiseptic power. It should not be swallowed and is not suitable for young children or people with thyroid conditions.
How to gargle properly
Take a small sip (about 10–15 mL), tilt your head back slightly, and gargle for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Do not swallow the solution. Repeat up to four times daily as directed on the label.
Practical tips
Use the solution at room temperature. Avoid using very hot or cold liquids. Drink enough water throughout the day, and rest your voice if you talk frequently.
If pain lasts longer than a few days or becomes severe, see Dr. Ali for further evaluation. Sometimes sore throats can indicate bacterial infection, reflux irritation, or other causes that need targeted management.
