💧 Why Hydrotherapy Helps
Hydrotherapy is very effective for neck and back pain because:
- Buoyancy of water reduces body weight and stress on joints and the spine.
- Hydrostatic pressure improves circulation and reduces swelling.
- Warm water (around 32–34°C) relaxes muscles and decreases spasms.
An ideal setting is a therapy pool about waist- to chest-deep (1–1.3 meters).
🧍♂️ Part 1: Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)
Purpose: To increase blood flow and prepare muscles before main exercises.
- Water Walking
- Walk forward and backward in waist-deep water.
- Take slow, controlled steps.
- Continue for 3–5 minutes.
- Arm and Shoulder Movements
- Move your arms outward and inward under water.
- Make small shoulder circles.
- Repeat 10 times in each direction.
💪 Part 2: Exercises for Lower Back Pain
- Pelvic Tilt in Water
- Stand with your back against the pool wall.
- Pull your belly slightly inward so your lower back flattens against the wall.
- Hold for 5 seconds, then relax.
- Repeat 10 times.
- Leg Lift
- Stand near the pool wall for support.
- Lift one leg straight forward (only as high as comfortable).
- Hold for 5 seconds, then lower.
- Repeat 10 times per leg.
- Floating Stretch
- Hold a kickboard with your arms extended and let your body float behind you.
- Feel a gentle stretch in your lower back.
- Hold for 20–30 seconds, repeat 2–3 times.
🦴 Part 3: Exercises for Neck Pain
- Gentle Neck Rotation
- Stand in shoulder-deep water.
- Slowly turn your head right and left.
- Then gently nod up and down.
- Repeat each movement 5 times.
- Shoulder Shrugs
- Lift your shoulders up toward your ears, hold 5 seconds, then relax.
- Repeat 10 times.
- Isometric Neck Resistance
- Place your palm on your forehead and gently press, resisting with your neck (without actual movement).
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Repeat with your hand on the back, right, and left sides of your head.
🌊 Part 4: Stretching & Cool Down (5 minutes)
- Full Body Stretch
- Hold onto the pool edge and slowly lean backward.
- Feel a stretch through your arms, shoulders, and spine.
- Hold 20 seconds, repeat 3 times.
- Relaxed Breathing
- Stand still, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and exhale slowly.
- Promotes relaxation and reduces muscle tension.
⚠️ Important Safety Tips
- If you have an active disc problem or recent injury, do these only under a physiotherapist’s supervision.
- Avoid sudden neck twisting or jerky movements.
- Keep the water warm, not hot (32–34°C).
- Stop immediately if you feel pain, numbness, or tingling.
